Fresh Start Mentees Awarded First Ever E. Jean Goulet Scholarships to Achieve Their Dreams

Phoenix, AZ (August, 2007) – Fourteen Fresh Start mentees were presented with the first ever E. Jean Goulet Memorial Scholarship this month at an award ceremony held at the Fresh Start Women’s Foundation in Phoenix. Barbara Anderson Stoiber, one of Fresh Start’s major advocates and supporters, created the E. Jean Goulet Memorial Scholarship to pay tribute to her mother and the tremendous value she placed on education.

Collectively, almost $72,000 in scholarship money was awarded and eight of the mentees received Mac laptops and printers to assist in their educational endeavors.

Fresh Start mentees and their families along with board members and staff attended the award ceremony to honor the academic achievements of the scholarship recipients. Chloe Hanson, Mentoring Manager for Fresh Start, said, “It was very rewarding to be able to offer such a unique opportunity to women who otherwise may not have been able to attend school and be empowered to seek more out of life.”

Scholarship recipients were required to be enrolled in the Fresh Start Mentoring Program for at least one year and be recommended by their mentors to receive the awards. Mentees receive guidance in the Fresh Start Mentoring Program by being paired with a mentor, developing a personalized plan for success and continuous one-on-one coaching to achieve their goals.

Hanson continued, “By supporting women in their educational and career goals,

the E. Jean Goulet Scholarship truly embodies the Fresh Start mission of helping women

help themselves.” This scholarship is a testament to Fresh Start’s commitment to the women they serve. The scholarship is expected to be awarded to new mentees in the spring of 2008.

Even as young teens, Pat and Beverly wanted to help women, who like their grandmother, suddenly became the whole support of their families. Over the years, the Arizona natives became ardent community activists on behalf of women. In 1992, Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart were in a position to personally and professionally reach out to women in need. The initial offering was a day of pampering at Rolf’s Salon, then co-owned by Pat, Beverly and Rolf Lohse. The women theorized that a new hair style and personalized make-up were immediate ways to boost one’s confidence and increase self-esteem. Each month 20 women from shelters and social service agencies were invited to “A Fresh Start Day of Beauty at Rolf’s.” This core Fresh Start service remains in place today through Rolf’s Salon as well as through the Self-Esteem Room at the Foundation’s Women’s Resource Center.
